On 01 March 2014, Kanchana Foundation organized a free orthopaedic and general health camp for the students and parents of the adopted Government higher primary school, Alanthaya. The intention to screen and treat the underprivileged community of Alanthaya, was done successfully with the help of a health team from Bangalore under the leadership of Mr. Sundar Bhat Kanchana(Representative Head of the Kanchana Foundation in India) and health manager Dr. Aruna Bhat Kanchana. The team of the doctors was led by experienced general physician Dr. Ishwar Bhat, who has been successfully treating patients since over 30 years, Dr. Ravikiran Bhat- a promising orthopaedic surgeon and Dr. Anshita Bhat- a young physiotherapist, they effectively dealt with over 150 patients and rendered their commendable service to Kanchana Foundation. Pens and chocolates were sponsored by Mrs. Geeta Bhat to the students of Alanthaya School, who were overjoyed at this kind gesture.Inauguration was initiated by the local Taluk Panchayat head Ms. Usha Anchan who has made a significant contribution to the school by sponsoring the installation of a clean toilet and lab equipment. The participating doctors also spoke a few words, thanking for the opportunity provided to serve the needy and promised to continue their support in the future. SDMC (School development and monitoring committee) head Mr. Veda Kumar Jain also graced the occasion.
The health camp received incredible response, with the village community making complete utilization of the opportunity and turning up in large numbers. There were several newly diagnosed cases of hypertension and diabetes. An interesting case of Bell's palsy following severe herpes zoster infection was also recorded. Suitable advice and free medicines were distributed and few cases were referred to local physicians for regular monitoring. Cases of orthopedic involvement were also significant in number. In addition to relevant medications, physiotherapeutic exercises were also demonstrated and taught. Pediatric cases were predominantly concerned with malnutrition and multivitamin tonics and capsules were distributed.
The highlight of the program was the bone density test, an indispensable aid in detecting osteoporosis, which was sponsored by Medilab, India (Pharma division). Free calcium supplements and other medicines were also provided by Medilab India.
